Insta360 Enters Mirrorless Market with Bold Designs

Insta360 is developing two mirrorless cameras, one featuring a shape "you've never even considered before," according to CEO Jingkang "JK" Liu. The company aims to leverage its technology and AI to make interchangeable lens cameras more accessible to beginners.

Two Cameras, One Unconventional Approach

Liu confirmed to Mynavi News that Insta360 is working on two mirrorless models, both with interchangeable lenses. One will stand out with a radically different form factor, while functionality will also diverge from traditional mirrorless cameras. The goal is to enable users to interact with the cameras in entirely new ways.

Simplifying Photography Through AI

Insta360's approach focuses on reducing the complexity of interchangeable lens cameras. "People should experience the moment, and the camera should handle the mechanics of capture," Liu told PetaPixel. The company plans to apply its existing technologies and AI to automate framing, stabilization, and settings.

CEO's Vision: The Camera That Disappears

Liu's philosophy centers on creating cameras that require minimal user intervention. He describes the ideal camera as one that "disappears," allowing photographers to focus entirely on the moment rather than technical adjustments. This contrasts with traditional mirrorless systems that often demand extensive manual control.

Prototype Expected at CP+ 2027

Insta360 plans to showcase a prototype at CP+ in Yokohama on February 25, 2027. The exhibition will provide the first public look at how the company's unconventional designs translate into physical products. Industry observers like Mynavi News' Osamu Iso believe the cameras could redefine fundamental photography actions.

Building on Insta360's Existing Expertise

The move into mirrorless cameras represents an expansion beyond Insta360's established 360-degree camera lineup. The company intends to apply its experience in computational photography and user-friendly interfaces to the new product category.

What Photographers Should Watch For

Professionals and enthusiasts can monitor CP+ 2027 for the prototype reveal, which will clarify Insta360's specific innovations in form and function. The company's success may hinge on whether its simplified approach appeals to new users without alienating experienced photographers.
